REPHRASING PRACTICE
Rewrite the sentences without changing its meaning:
Szintfelmérő teszt: Készülhetsz-e már a középfokú nyelvvizsgára?
A: Good morning. Take a seat, please. OK, could you tell me what your name is?
B: My name is . . . . .
A: How old are you?
B: I am . . . . . years old.

Raise must have an object, as it is a transitive verb. It is a regular verb; its three forms are raise, raised, raised:

Our favourite restaurant has raised its prices again. It’s getting very expensive.
Rise does not take an object, as it is an intransitive verb. It is an irregular verb; its three forms are rise, rose, risen:
The sun rose at 5.30 this morning.
Rents have risen sharply in this part of town.

| In general, irregular verbs are troublesome to learn. Regular verbs create their past and past participle forms by adding “d” or “ed” to the stem of their infinitives (love, loved, loved), but irregular verbs create past and past participle forms by altering their stems in unpredictable ways. A number of common irregular verbs give people trouble, particularly: dive, drown, fly, hang, lead, prove, sit, set and shrink. |
