In our school there are a lot of computers for the student in the laboratories. There are on-line service as well: you can buy or sell things via the Internet or study languages at home pages run by universities.
The basic configuration consists of the CPU, a hard disk, a monitor, a display, a keyboard, a mouse, a CD-ROM, floppy drivers, etc. There are special classes in programming. Other classes use computers for typing and printing off letters.
There are computer magazines which detail the lates programmes. You can get information about everything through the Internet, which is a worldwide connection, a network of invidual computers. Large companies stand behind them and they operate so called web site (or home pages), where you can link to other sites to search for information, images, etc.
You can type your documents and format them afterwards and print them. You have to check the cables first and click on the OK button to start printing. If you want to send messages urgently, you can use e-mail services on the Internet and get and send to your partner in a very short time.
Many children have their own computers for home use. They install games / multimedia programs and spend hours in front of the monitor. They will not play with dolls or balls any more if they have a PC.
All in all, computers have revolutionised our lives and we still can’t say that this is the end of the development.

MOBILE PHONES
These little devices are also called a handy or a cell phone. In my opinion the mobile phone is a very significant invention since it makes our life easier and mobile. Technology is going through such rapid development that you can hardly follow the latest models of mobile phones.
Today besides making telephone calls mobiles are also used for sending pictures, listening to the radio and music, watching videofiles and so on. They are getting smaller and smaller but they know more and more. These phones are very useful in families as they make the family members available any time, anywhere if they're in trouble and need help.
Mobile phones are the most comfortable and fastest way to keep in touch with relatives and friends. They provide a day-to-day contact even with distant relatives. Mobile phones increase communication because people can communicate with each other by sending short text messages wherever they are.
Young users are more likely to send messages to reduce the costs. Mobile phones are very useful and are growing in popularity among every age-group. I believe that the number of mobile phone owners will grow a lot in the next few years. Mobile phones are status symbols as well.
But some people are concerned that there is a possible health risk as moblie phones are bad for your memory and can cause cancer. Some mobile phone users are concerned that having the phone's antenna close to their head, exposes them to levels of radio waves that will increase the risk of brain cancer.
Therefore 'handsfree' mobiles could be more dangerous than ordinary mobile phones. With the research that has been done so far, scientists generally agree that radio waves cannot cause cancer, but there is some debate about whether they can make an already existing cancer grow faster. Options to reduce exposure are available for mobile phone users who are concerned about the possible health risks. Minimising call times is obvious, but using an earphone / microphone cable attached to the mobile phone allows its use away from the user's head.
There is still an open question whether the mobile phones are really useful or rather wasteful? Many debate the point and are against mobile phones thinking that it's wasteful more often than useful.
Some people become addicted to their mobile phones and without it in their hands, their hands start shaking and feel handicapped! If it doesn't ring after sometime, they switch off and switch on just to check if the connectivity is still there.
Some people find mobile phones irritating and think that most conversations are avoidable and are just mutual flattery. It is thought that hardly 10% real business is done over phone concversations, except by those who are real business minded!
Of course everything depends on the status of the caller and receiver. Many traffic accidents happen due to mobile phones while driving! The best solution is to have silent messaging so the receiver can see the message at his / her convenience and respond!

Mobiles - useful or dangerous?
Why are mobiles so popular? Because people love to talk to each other. And it is easier with a mobile phone. People think mobile phones are fun and useful. In countries like Russia and China, people use mobile phones in places where there is no ordinary telephone. Business people use mobiles when they’re travelling. In some countries, like Japan, many people use their mobile phones to send e-mail messages and access the Internet. They use a new kind of mobile phone called ‘i-mode’. You can even use a mobile phone to listen to music.
Mobile phones are very fashionable among teenagers. Parents buy mobile phones for their children. They can call home if they are in trouble and need help. So they feel safer. But teenagers mostly use them to keep in touch with their friends or play simple computer games. It’s cool to be the owner of a small, expensive mobile! As eighteen-year-old Londoner Rosie Farrer says, ‘Before, girls of my age smoked cigarettes to look good. Now we have mobiles!’ Rosie’s right. Research shows that teenage owners of mobile phones smoke less! Parents and schools are happy that teenagers are safer and smoke less. But they are worried about the possible problems of mobile phones.
There are now 750 million mobile phone users around the world. This number will probably grow to 1.4 billion in five years’ time. Many people dislike them. They hate it when the businessman opposite them on the train has a loud conversation on his phone or when mobile phones ring in the café, in the restaurant or in the cinema.
But there is a much more serious problem. We are not sure that mobiles are completely safe. It’s possible that mobiles can heat up the brain because we hold the phone so close to our head. Scientists fear that mobiles can perhaps be bad for your memory and even it can cause cancer. Because of these fears, some people use a ‘handsfree’ mobile – a phone that you needn’t hold to your ear. But it is possible that these are more dangerous. We just don’t know and many parents don’t give their younger children mobiles for this reason.
So why do we use mobiles when we aren’t sure they’re safe? Because mobiles are a lot of fun and very useful, we can forget the possible dangers. We believe that mobiles are safe. Let’s hope we’re right!
