Hiánypótló kifejezések, idiómák, frázisok, nyelvi érdekességek  - fordításhoz, élő nyelvhasználathoz


Ezek olyan állandósult szókapcsolatok, melyeket a köznapi angol nyelvben gyakran használnak. Ennél jóval több van belőlük, de ez az adag sem kevés. Nem szerepelnek itt az alapból megtanultak: ask for, look for, look after, watch out, viszont ezek a nyelvkönyvekben, tananyagban szerepelnek, és előfordulásuk, használatuk jóval gyakoribb. Az itt szereplő szókapcsolatok jobbára extra kifejezések, fordításhoz adnak segítséget.

Nyelvvizsgára is érdemes párat (nem sokat!) megtanulni, a lényeg, hogy biztosan tudjuk használni. Mondattal együtt könnyebb megjegyezni, csinálhatunk belőle kis kártyákat is. Mindig érdemes vizsgák előtt a "tarsolyunkban" tartani ezekből a különlegességekből is. Válassz olyat, amivel gyakrabban találkoztál és használd őket! Egészítsd ki a listádat! Így gyakorolsz is. Az pedig ugye a tudás anyukája. :-)

Az online fordító-oldalak általában nem képesek jól fordítani ezeket a szóösszetételeket.

PHRASAL VERBS I.


Add up (semmi értelme nincs): It just doesn’t add up, it is absolutely useless.
Ask after (kérdezősködik valami/valaki után): A policeman was asking after your uncle.

Back down (visszatáncol, visszaszívja, amit mondott): My mum was right so dad had to back down, as usual.

Bear out (igazol, megerősít): The air-raid was borne out by the spokesman of the army.
Break down (összeomlik, megrendül): My grandma broken down when her husband died.
Break off (abbamarad valami): Our conversation was broken off after a while since we had nothing to talk about.
Break up (feloszlik, befejeződik): Steve’s bachelor party broke up at 4 am.
Bring off (sikerre visz, sikerül): It was the fourth time I tied to pass my exam and finally I brought it off.
Bring on (előidéz, okoz )? You have brought it on yourself because we told you not to do it.
Bring round (megtérít, saját pártjára állít): My mother-in-law hated me in the past, but I could bring her round and she has been very kind to me since then.
Bring under (leigáz): The Romans brought many nations under.
Bring up (felelevenít, felhoz valamit): I don’t think you should have brought this matter up again, it really hurts me.

Call around (benéz, beugrik valahova): Will you come around tomorrow? I would be happy if you could visit me.
Call for (kiált valamiért, hívat valakit): My boss called for Susan because she had made a big mistake in accounting.
Call up (behívják katonának): Joe was called up when the Second World war broke out.
Carry off (sikerül neki, megúsz valamit):He is a lucky man, he always carries everything off.
Catch on (sikere van valaminek): Jon’s new play is a big success, it is beginning to catch on.
Come about (megtörténik): How did it come about?
Come off (sikerül): I don’t think that Mary will come off in his Maths exam.
Come out (kitudódik): The secret about Leslie and Norman has come out.
Come up (felbukkan, felszínre kerül): During the negotiations many problems have come up.
Come up against (összetűzésbe kerül): Mariah came up against her mum because of her boyfriend.
Count on (számít valakire): Jenny is a reliable person, you an always count on her.

Do away with (megszüntet, lerombol): The house I was born in will be done away with next week.
Do up (díszít): Mary’s new house is going to be done up with nice pictures and flowers.
Drop in (benéz, bekukkant): Please, drop in if you have some time.
Drop off (elszundít): I was at the movies yesterday and the film was so boring that I dropped off.

End up (végez, befejez valamit): The Minister will end up his speech with a quotation.

Face up to ( szembeszáll valamivel, valakivel): My brother faced up to my dad, they always had quarrels.
Fall for (elhisz , bevesz valamit): My brother fell for his classmate’s gossip about Jane.
Fall out (összeveszik valakivel): Why on earth did you fall out with you mum? She is crying.
Fall through (megbukik, nem sikerül): I’m afraid, I will fall through my language exam, I didn’t understand anything.
Follow up (nyomon követ): The secretary is expected to follow up the correspondence of the company.

Get across (megvalósít, keresztüljuttat valamit ): The director couldn’t get his ideas across since all the actors were too stupid to understand his instructions.
Get at (célozgat): Tell me, what are you getting at?
Get down (lehangol). Bad news usually gets me down.
Get off with (megúsz valamit, megmenekül): This bastard was very lucky to get off with prison.
Get on (boldogul): How are you getting on in your new school?
Get over with (letud, elintéz): I hate this project, I want to get it over as soon as possible.
Get up to (rosszalkodik): My kids are always getting up to mischief.

Give away (elárul valamit, valakit): His nervous behaviour gave the him away and the police were sure ha had committed the crime.
Give forth (közöl, közzé tesz): This gossipy paper has given forth Falco’s private life in their latest issue.
Give off (kibocsát, áraszt): This unkonwn flower gave off some weird smell that was strange to all of us.
Give out (fogytán van ): I’m afarid, we are giving out of rice, may I ask you to buy some if you go to the supermarket?
Give over (abbahagy, eláll valamitől): Hey, give over crying, there is no using in it.
Give up (felad valamit, feladja magát ): The burglers finally gave up the struggle, they had no chance to escape.
Go back on (visszavon, visszaszív valamit): Sylvia was angry with her child so she went on her promise and didn’t allow him to play with his friends.
Go in for (foglalkozik valamivel): my grnadmy started to go in for yoga at the age of 80 and she is feeling much better than before.
Go off (megromlik): I forgot to put the sausage into the fridge and it went off.
Go on (folyatódik, történik valami): What is going on here? Why are you laughing at me, pal?
Go round (elég valami, futja valamiből): Jack had enough money to invite his parents for a dinner and his money went round.
Grow on (hatalmába kerít): I don’t know about you, but the new Maths teacher grew on me, I love her.

Have it in for (bosszút forral valaki ellen): I’m very disappointed in Martin, I will have it in for him, he’ll be punished for what he’d done to me.
Have it out with (tisztáz valamit, tiszta vizet önt a pohárba): Having a serious dabate with my mum, we had all matters out with each other.
Have someone on (lóvát tesz): You’re a tricky guy, you would alway have me on.
Hit it off (jól kijön valakivel): Me and my brothers never had any problems, we usually hit it off.
Hit upon (ráhibázik, rátalál): What a lucky girl she is! Marta always hits upon the answer.
Hold out (biztat, kecsegtet): The doctors in hospital didn’t hold us out, they say my uncle is dying.
Hold up (gátol, akadályoz): Get out of my way! You’re holding me up.
Hold with (egyetért valakivel): Her boss held with her and gave her a 50% raise.

Keep up (folytat): Don’t stop moving, keep it up!

Lay down (leszögez, lefektet valamit, pl. szabályt): My boss has laid down the principles.
Let down (cserbenhagy): Oh, dear, I’m so sorry to let you down, but I can’t lend you money.
Let it on (kifecseg, elárul): Don’t tell this information Mary, she will let it on.
Let off (mentesít valami alól): Being tired, my mum let me off from doing the housework.
Live up to (megfelel a várakozásnak): Your marks are pretty good, they live up to my expectations.
Look into (kivizsgál): The police had to look into all details in connection with the murder.
Look on (vamit valamilyennek tekint): Sally looks on Eve as her second mother.
Look someone up (meglátogat valakit): Please feel free to look me up when you’re in Budapest.

Make for (hozzájárul valamihez): Hard working makes for pasing all your exams.
Make out (állít valamit): Joe made out the he hadn’t realized the pedestrian.
Make someone out (megért valamit): I had the same situation with my sister so I make you out.
Make up (kitalál/kiötöl valamit): I don’t believe you, you must have made the whole story up.
Make up for (pótol valamit, kárpótol): Hard working is often made up for.

Own up (bevall valamit): The murderer finally owned the crime up.

Pay back (visszafizeti a kölcsönt, bosszút áll): Sandy hurt Joe so he paid her back for what she had done to him.
Pick up (javul, erősödik): My nephew is picking up, he feels much better due to the medicine.
Pin someone down (szaván fog): Gloria has a strong personality, she is always pinning people down.
Play up (rosszul működik): We need a new fridge, the old one plays up day by day. It doesn’t work at all.
Point out (rámutat a lényegre, a tényekre): There is no piont in evading the issue, just point it out.
Pull off (sikerre juttat valamit, sikerül): In the end my team pulled off, we managed to win the competition.
Push on (ösztökél): Muriel’s grandpa often pushes her grandson by giving her chocolate.
Put across (meggyőzően előad valamit): My History teacher has a good sense of communication is and can put his lectures in a fantastic way.
Put in for (bead, benyújt valamit, pl. pályázatot, kérelmet): If I were you, I would probably put in for the tender, your chances seem to be better than the others’.
Put oneself out (nem sajnálja a fáradtságot valamiért): Kylie is a very persistent girl, she puts herself out until she reaches what she wants.
Put off (zavarba hoz, gátol): The student was put off at the exam by the difficult questions and he couldn’t succeed.

PHRASAL VERBS III.

Rip off ("megfej", megvág): Did your mother pay 2.000.000 forints for this car? She was ripped off.
Run down (lemerül): I have been using the camcorder for 6 weeks and all the batteries have run down.
Run into (találkozik valakivel): Imagine, I ran into Gizi last week near Pólus Center.
Run to (telik valamire): Martha is always out of money, she can’t run to a new Mercedes.
Run over (átlapoz): Having no time, I just run the newspaper over.
Run up against (belebotlik valamibe): During my summer holiday in London, I run up against many problems due to my poor English.

See someone off (kikísér valakit): I hate being seen off by mum and dad whenever I fly to Madrid.
See through (átlát, belelát a veséjébe): My maths teacher saw through my intentions and took my cribs.
Send up (nevetségessé tesz): I hate you, you are always sending me up.
Set about (munkába áll, hozzáfog valamihez): Jason had to set about work at 6 quite early.
Set out (közzétesz): Result of the language exam will be set out next week.
Set on (rátámad): Linda was set upon by an unknown man last night and her money was stolen.
Sort out (megold): If I were you, I would immediately sort out this exercise.
Stand by (kiáll valamiért): Julie never stands by herself, she is too shy to protect her rights.
Stand for (jelent valamit): What the hell this word stands for, it is Greek to me.
Stand up to (ellenáll valaminek): My new coat stands up to rain so I don’t need an umbrella.
Step down (leköszön, távozik): The Minister of Health had to step down because she had a love affair with her secretary.
Stick up for (kiáll valamiért): Whatever happens to Louis, he sticks up for his right.

Take in (becsap): You needn’t tell lies. There is no point in taking people in.
Take off (utánoz): My child often takes my husband off and he likes it.
Take to someone (megkedvel): Dana is a nice person and your mother will soon take to her.
Take up (leköt, elfoglal): The negotiation with our partners will take up about 3 hours.
Talk out of (lebeszél): Mark wanted to talk me out of climbing Mount Everest and he managed to do it, I won’t go there.
Tell off (lehord valakit, megszid): Why did you mother tell you off? What’s happened?
Track down (kinyomoz): The police were tracking down Mr Smith’s address and finally they arrested him.
Try out (kipróbál): Sue was dreaming of trying parachuting out but she was afraid of it at first.
Turn down (vissautasít): I didn’t accept my boss’s offer so I turned it down.
Turn up (betoppan): How many people turned up last night?

Wear off (hatását veszti): Take 2 pills because they will wear off very soon.
Work out (kiszámít): Mum is an accountant and she worked the tax to be paid out.
