Jake: Hey Lena, thanks for meeting up with me. I really needed to talk to someone.
Lena: Of course! You sounded pretty stressed on the phone. What's going on?
Jake: Yeah, I've been dealing with this situation at work and... I don't know, I'm just not sure
what to do about it. Can you give me some advice?
Lena: Sure! Tell me what's happening.
Jake: Well, so my boss offered me a promotion last week, which sounds great, right? But
here's the thing – it would mean relocating to another city, and I'd have to leave in like two
months.
Lena: Oh wow, that's... that's a big decision. Um, do you want the promotion?
Jake: That's the problem! I mean, yeah, it's a great opportunity. Better salary, more
responsibility, all that stuff. But I've built my whole life here, you know? My friends, my
apartment, everything. And honestly, if I had known this would happen, I would've thought
twice before taking this job in the first place.
Lena: I totally get you. It's tough when you have to choose between your career and your
personal life. Have you tried talking to your boss about maybe delaying the move or finding
another solution?
Jake: Not really. I've been avoiding it because I don't want to seem ungrateful or anything.
But the deadline to give them an answer is next Friday, and I'm running out of time to figure
this out... what would you do if you were me? Like, seriously, if you were in my shoes?
Lena: Hmm, that's tough. If I were you, I'd probably make a list of pros and cons first. You
know, write down everything that could go right and everything that could go wrong.
Sometimes seeing it on paper helps you sort out your thoughts.
Jake: Yeah, that makes sense. I've been trying to do that in my head, but it just feels like a
mess.
Lena: Exactly! And here's the thing – you need to think about what you'd regret more. Would
you regret not taking the opportunity and always wondering what could've been? Or would
you regret leaving everything behind and starting over somewhere new?
Jake: mmm, I don't know! That's what's killing me. I feel like either way, I'm going to regret
something.
Lena: Look, I'd suggest taking a day or two to really think it through. Don't rush this decision.
Maybe you could visit the new city first? Like, go there for a weekend, check out the
neighborhood, see if you can actually picture yourself living there.
Jake: That's not a bad idea. I hadn't thought of that. Do you think I should tell my boss I
need more time?
Lena: Why don't you ask for an extension? Just be honest with them. Say you want to make
sure you're making the right choice. Most employers would understand that. It might be a
good idea to show them you're taking this seriously.
Jake: Yeah, you're probably right. I've just been so worried about making the wrong choice,
you know? Like, if I had been more careful about my career path earlier, I wouldn't be in this
mess right now.
Lena: Hey, don't be so hard on yourself. You couldn't have predicted this would happen.
Listen, at the end of the day, you need to trust your gut. What does your intuition tell you?
Jake: Honestly? Part of me is excited about the challenge, but another part of me just wants
things to stay the same. I'm scared of change, I guess.
Lena: That's totally normal. Change is scary for everyone. But you know what? If I were in
your shoes, I'd also think about where I want to be in five years. If you don't take this
opportunity, will you still be happy at your current position? Or will you always wonder what
if?
Jake: You're right. I need to look at the bigger picture. Maybe I'm just focusing too much on
the immediate discomfort and not enough on the long-term benefits.
Lena: Exactly! And another thing – if you had taken the promotion without thinking, you
might have regretted rushing into it. So taking your time to make up your mind is actually
smart.
Jake: Thanks, Lena. This really helps. I think the best thing to do is to talk to my boss
tomorrow and ask for that extension. And then maybe book a trip to check out the city next
weekend.
Lena: There you go! That sounds like a solid plan. And hey, whatever you decide, I'm here
for you, okay?
Jake: Thanks. I really appreciate it. I feel a bit better now. At least I have a plan to sort this
out.
Lena: Good! Just remember – there's no perfect choice here. You just have to figure out
what feels right for you and go with it.
Jake: Yeah, you're right. I'll let you know how it goes!
