For and against essays

A "for and against" essay is a formal piece of writing in which a topic is considered from opposing points of view. You should present both sides in a fair way by discussing them objectively and in equal detail.
A good essay of this type should consist of:
a) an introductory paragraph in which you clearly state the topic to be discussed, without giving your opinion;
b) a main body in which the points for and against along with your justifications, examples or reasons are presented in separate paragraphs; and
c) a closing paragraph in which you state your opinion or give a balanced consid¬eration of the topic.
Note: Opinion words (I think, I believe, In my opinion, etc.) can only be used in the closing paragraph where you give your opinion on the topic.

"Akár tetszik, akár nem, esszét írni a középiskolától kezdve mindenkinek kell, a felsőoktatásban pedig mindennapos feladat. A valóságban egy esszé megírása leggyakrabban egy önálló kutatási és tanulási feladat utolsó eleme. Az írásműben a szerzőnek egyrészt azt kell bebizonyítania, hogy a kijelölt témában milyen ügyesen vizsgálódott, másrészt tapasztalatait, érveit és következtetéseit egy logikusan felépített, egymáshoz szorosan kapcsolódó egységekből, bekezdésekből álló szövegben kell bemutatnia.

Természetesen egy nyelvvizsga helyzetben írandó esszé mögött nem áll kutakodás, de a gondolataid logikus rendezését és egymás mellé szerkesztését annál inkább elvárják az értékelők. Bár sokan félnek ezt a szövegtípust választani − amennyiben egy nyelvvizsga felajánlja a műfaj választásának lehetőségét  −,  több  érv  is  szól  mellette:  jól  megragadható  szerkesztési  szabályszerűségei  (ld. Verbs connected with beliefs and opinions - I think/ I believe:


I'm convinced we've met before. (very strong feeling that you're right)
I feel she shouldn't be forced to do the job. (strong personal opinion)
I reckon they'll get married soon. (informal, usually an opinion about what is likely to happen)
I doubt we'll ever see total world peace. (don't believe)
I suspect a lot of people never even think about pollution when they're driving their own car. (have a strong feeling about something negative)
